WINTER SINGLES LEAGUE UP AND RUNNING               from Steve Traynor

After 8 months of development, tears and tantrums the single league has finally started and those taking part on Thursday had 2 hours of enjoyable bowls.

Background

In my experience a large majority of bowlers prefer the traditional way the game has always been played and the core league games at the club very much follow that mindset. Players are happy to continue the way they have played for many years. Unfortunately, as we have seen, clubs are finding it difficult to attract new members and keep them engaged as it takes many years to gain experience and grow in confidence if you follow this traditional rigid approach.

In my view clubs need to modernise to survive and come up with a different offer to attract and keep younger bowlers and try come up with new ideas to engage new members and survive into the future. Having taken a keen interest in the Grand Prix series over the past 3 years I decided to give this format a go and joined the Open Singles Circuit last year and played in the open competitions at Lincoln, Worksop and Boston. Although very enjoyable, it proved expensive and if you lost your first game the competition was over.

In light of this experience I came up with the idea of a sets singles league over the winter at Lincoln and put together a format loosely based on a format used by all squash clubs which group players of a similar standard together, they play each other and then move up or down the ladder depending on results.

League Format

The games are played on the late evening slot on a Thursday at 8.30 pm. Games 2 sets of 6 ends with a 3 end tie break if required. 2 games are played during the 2 hours.
Each league has 6 players who play each other once over a 2 month period. The league runs over 4 periods (Sep/Oct, Nov/Dec, Jan/Feb and Mar/Apr). At the end of each period the top 2 players in each league move to the next higher league and the bottom 2 players move to the next lower league. At the end of each period a cash prize will be awarded to the top 2 players of each league.
All players will play 20 games over the winter and I am sure they will enjoy the challenge of marking, learning new skills and improving the kind of shots needed to win games in this format.

Come and Join Us

We are able to take a further 12 players in 2 leagues for the next period starting in November. If you are from the traditional camp this will probably not be of interest but if you want a new challenge and can commit to playing your games at 8.30 pm come and take a look next Thursday when the next league games are being played. I will be having a meeting with the players prior to the start of the games at 8 pm but will be around from 7.30 pm and will be happy to answer any questions.

My contact telephone is 01529 462957.
