Set up from Howard Jarrold

The winter season is just around the corner, and a few outdoor bowlers are coming in to get the feel of the indoors again. In adjusting to the different surface why not give your game an MOT , starting with your set up. If you are a bowler who does not have a set routine and/or has no clear objective in mind. will I hope, find this article of use. Apart from practice all the good players in all sports have certain things in common. They all have a set routine and a clear objective of what they want to achieve. These two things are drummed into players in most sports. Golf is a prime example. When Mcilroy is on the practice ground his coach is there with him. These coaches know that it is imperative that having a clear picture in your mind of what you want to do and having a set routine , sets you up in the best possible way to achieve your objective. So how do we go about things 1. Pay attention to all the woods .Don't be the one that has to be reminded it's your turn. 2. Step onto the mat and decide the shot to be played. 3. Take your grip and check it. 4. Now take your stance. Always have your feet in the same place on the mat. ( positional foot placement is for the better player and is a valuable tool when you know what you are doing ) 5. Look at the head as a whole and visualize your wood doing what you require it to do and the track it must follow to achieve it 6. Then and only then deliver the wood. When the above is done and becomes second nature it gives you the confidence to play the shot because you've done it so many times before. It also helps to reduce the effect of nerves , which is a critical factor in important matches. Remember that the brain and the muscles have a memory and the food they thrive on is called practice.
