Get the weight down !               from Howard Jarrold

Very soon now the end ditches will be bombarded with woods that have been outside all summer, as members try to come to terms with the faster surface of the indoor rink.
Weight , as we call the amount of propulsion given to the wood is simply the rolling of the wood down the rink towards the jack. Oh that it were that simple!
Consistency of length is totally dependant on the line being correct every time. The two are inter dependant of each other. Get the line right and you are on the way to the length being right. Get the line wrong and it is down to good fortune if you get near the jack.
As this post is about re adjusting the weight I will assume that you have the correct line. So how do you get the feel of the right weight back?
To answer this it is important to understand that this is a feeling thing and/or a muscle memory. It is not like a line along which you can direct your wood which can be changed by a conscious action.
I find the best way to retrain or teach this muscle memory is NOT to send endless woods down, instead try this: Use rinks 1, 4, 5, or 8. Stand on the mat and aim to deliver your wood 4 spots down the centre line of spots with the bias taking the wood into the ditch. Only move up to 6 spots when you can comfortably do 4 spots slowly and straight. From 6 spots move up a yard at a time until you are at point where the wood normally starts breaking. Take your time and roll slowly and accurately.
Now try along the proper line but WITHOUT the jack. Just aim to get the wood back on the centre line.
When you have sent 10/12 woods down and hit the centre line then bring back the jack and hey presto you are back in business.
Please check your bias !
