DENNY CUP RESULT AND REPORT v LOUTH 20/10/2018 from Gordon Wood
|
LIBC's first Denny Cup game ended in a victory but it turned out more difficult than we expected. A reminder, if needed, that every one can be beaten by anyone.
AT HOME WERE:
R. Jackson, M. Nott, B. Wilson and W Jackson 16 J. McCue, P. Mortimer, A. Musson, G. Bell 20
5 ends saw both sides giving as good as they got with a score of 3-3. The LIBC rink failed to score on four of the next 5 to fall behind 5-10. 15 ends and Louth still had their noses in front as Billy's rink could only pull one shot back. 10-14 With both sides sharing the ends and shots the final score still showed a deficit of 4 in favour of the visitors. 16-20
G. Draper, P. O'Reilly, M. Smith and R. Ashton 31 A. Cave, R. Lamb, S. Reeson, A. Leggett 11
Despite some doubts this rink performed very well indeed, taking a quick 7-2 lead before extending it to an impressive 18-2 lead after only 10 ends. The Louth rink then had a mini revival scoring on two consecutive ends after losing eight ends in row, unfortunately for them LIBC dominated the next five ends to go into the last end leading 31-5. Wether it was Louth's determination or LIBC's satisfaction of making the game safe, Louth picked up a six on the last end.
PLAYING AWAY WERE:
S. Ashton, J. Staples, D. Stevenson and D. Brown 16 H. Cope, K. Kelly, J. Welsh, C. Smith 17
A good, close game from start to finish as the score card shows, from 13 ends out of the 21 came 13 shots. At five ends Louth had their noses in front by 4-2 and by the tenth end by 7-4. Louth continued to play steady, safe bowls while LIBC appeared to be somewhat lacklustre and as a result fell further behind at 15 ends by 7-12. LIBC started to play a little better as the ends started to run out and managed to pull back to 12-15 at eighteen ends. A fighting finish left Danny's rink just coming up short losing by just one shot 16-17
J. Nott, A. Watts, S. Burton and K. Rands 16 M. Fremantle, M. Hewson, A. Watson, A. Dent Snr. 15
Louth suffered a blow when A. Dent Jnr called with thirty minutes to go informing Louth he would not be playing. The Louth Captain (Alan Watson) just had time to go home for his 'kit' to take his place. There were times during the game that I had cause to curse Alan's presence on the rink, a very able substitute. LIBC went into an early lead after five ends 4-1. Ten ends saw Louth pull level 6-6 by virtue of a 3, 1, 1, on three consecutive ends. LIBC won three of the next five ends to lead by 12-9. Back came Louth and the excitement level rose as first the head advantage was ours, then theirs. Some good bowls from both sides with the advantage going to Louth as the eighteenth end finished 12-14 in favour of the home team. Once again the pendulum swung the other way with Kev's rink winning two of the last three ends winning by 16-15.
All in all a workmanlike away performance finishing all square 32-32 and with the home rinks winning 47-31 it was a case of 'job done'
Next round against Spalding.
