The new carpet               from Howard Jarrold

Next summer we are having the carpets replaced . The members will have the chance to have a say in which colour they will be done. The choice is green or blue. Over on Facebook I have, in an article , tried to lay out the business reasons that the board will have to take note of when deciding how when why etc The question I get asked is why we need to change the carpet and what will it play like.
First thing to say is that the colour has no effect on how the woods will run. Colour is cosmetic and the reasons for one colour over another are rooted in the psyche and the perceived effect that appearance has a bearing on how the game is viewed by the non bowling public.
How will the new surface affect our game. The answer to that is that i t will but by how much depends on you and how quickly you can find the new line that your bowls will take and how soon you adapt to the speed of it. The current carpets have been down some 15 years, have been stretched countless times and are as bald and shiny as Gordon Wood's top knot! ( Love you really Gordon). The smoother the carpet the farther the bowl will run and the longer it takes for the bias to take effect.
The new carpet will have a thick pile and will be on new underlay. The effect of this is that the surface will feel ( and is ) spongy. So the more you bounce the bowl into the carpet the greater the built up potential or kinetic energy is dissipated into the carpet and the quicker the bowl slows down. Added to this is the coefficient of friction of a carpet with pile is vastly different to a smooth surface causing further resistance to the forward trajectory of the bowl. With the slower moving bowl the quicker the bias kicks in and suddenly your bowls react differently. Depending on how you deliver them it is possible to have Tiger 2s play like Vector Vs. The good news is the carpet beds in and it gets stretched frequently during this time and that coupled with you getting more used to the surface means happier bowling. The smother you roll your woods the less you will be affected.
Please don't look to changing your woods as a way out of the changed conditions. It doesn't work like that I'm afraid.
It all sounds like doom and gloom but it isn't. Enjoy and embrace the challenge. There is no law that says it has to be easy.
