Part 2               from Howard Jarrold

Part 2. Set up.
Arguably the most important component part in the game of bowls, yet most players have very little idea on the cause and effect of poor set up. Even worse is the ' I can't play back/fore hand' player who never bothers to find out why. If you can deliver a wood on one hand then you can do so on the other hand. Guaranteed ! Most problems have their roots in the set up.
To get the set up right everytime you need to develop a routine that suits you, is simple and is repeatable. So, what do you need to do ?
* Step on the mat and relax. Look straight down the line and establish the jack position.
* Decide the hand you're going on. To clarify - Forehand for a right hander is down the right side and backhand the left side. For left handers the opposite applies.
* Take your grip and stance. Grip is covered in part 1 . Stance is critical, and getting it right is the key to producing good delivery.
* Establishing the delivery line will be covered in Part 3 but the reason for not covering it now is that finding it for yourself helps towards getting a feeling for the line, which improves your game immensely.
* My prefered way to establish the line is to gently swing your delivery arm to and fro, making sure that you swing it clear of your body. ( By moving your right foot back a couple of inches and moving it clockwise to the twenty to two position moves the hip out of the way )
* Shuffle your self round so that your entire body and feet are looking down the line that your swinging arm is telling you is the correct line. At this point you are ready to deliver the bowl. Before you deliver it practise the following--
* Continue to swing your arm and bend your knees and or your back until the bowl is just off the floor. Stop when your arm is perpendicular and you are then at the point of release of the bowl. Note that your shoulder is directly above this release point. If you move forward on your delivery then your shoulder moves too, and so does the release point.
* Practise swinging your arm and rolling the bowl along the desired line. Don't use a jack. Just roll the wood and get used to bringing it back on the centre line . If it goes over the centre line you need to start it out a little wider and a shade narrower if it fails to reach the centre line. At this stage length is not important . Only introduce the jack when you can consistently put four woods in a line down the middle. That delivery line will quickly become 2nd nature. Always take up the same position on the mat.
* If your line was on the fore hand then repeat the above on the backhand and note that the line is quite a bit narrower on the backhand. Again same feet position.
* If your delivery can be heard as it thumps onto the rink then you need to look into how you can roll your woods without any thumps. Try setting up with your knees bent a little more than you normally do.
* A lot of the above will seem odd at first but persevere. Try and work the exerercises into your own delivery method. That will give you confidence to carry on.
* There is a lot more to come but until I get time to put it together keep working on the set up and making your delivery thump free !
* Please email me if you have any problems with what we have covered so far hjarrold@gmail.com
