COMPETITIONS

Members arranging competitions (National, County, Club etc) are advised to consult the programme sheets available at the bar.

COMPETITION RULES

  1. All competition rules are as stated on the draw sheets.
  2. Unless agreed mutually, the choice of rink will be decided by the toss of a coin.
  3. Players in singles competitions may not visit the head until 3 bowls have been delivered by each player.
  4. Competitions are open to Full Members only.
  5. Any side without a full compliment of players (Pairs, Triples, or Fours) at the starting time will be eliminated, irrespective of the circumstances.
  6. Club and County Competitions can be played at any time when rink space is available
  7. In singles matches players should ensure that the services of a competent marker are arranged.
  8. After all games, the losing skip/player must sign the scorecard. The winning player/skip is then responsible for placing the card in the appropriate box.
  9. Please indicate on the card if you have used a substitute. One substitute is allowed per competition (in Mixed competitions, one male and one female substitute are allowed), provided that the same player is used as a substitute in any subsequent rounds.
  10. Do not enter your name on the Draw Sheets. Only the Competition Secretary can write on the Draw Sheets.
  11. Trial Ends are NOT allowed
  12. Set Match dates must be adhered to. Under no circumstances can matches be played after the closing date. No extensions will be allowed.
  13. If the jack is cast incorrectly before the bell has sounded (and the mat is correctly placed), the jack will be recast by the opposing team regardless of the fact that the bell has sounded.
  14. Team members should note that there will be no visits to the head during any timed matches unless both skips agree to do so before play commences.
  15. Dress shall be predominately white above the waist for all competitions.
  16. Common sense should be used when arranging and playing competitions. Please show respect for your opponents and other Club Members.
  17. A genuine effort to complete the maximum number of ends must be made by all players. It is hoped that in the true spirit of the game, time wasting tactics will not be employed.

AUSTRALIAN PAIRS RULES

  • Each player to play 4 bowls.
  • On odd ends, Leads play 2 bowls alternately, Skips play 4 bowls alternately, then Leads play their remaining two bowls.
  • On even ends, Skips play 2 bowls alternately, Leads play 4 bowls alternately, then the Skips play their remaining 2 bowls.
  • If an end is killed, the offending team is penalised 2 shots and the end is deemed a “played end”.
  • Apart from the aforementioned, the game is played to normal rules.

NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Rinks for National Competitions can be booked via the bar staff.

Green Fees in respect of national competitions will be booked for two sessions (4 Hours) and charged at a rate of one and a half sessions (3 hours) regardless of the actual match duration. (with the exception of singles matches which will only be booked for 2 hours).

Rinks will be left free on some weekday evenings in Nov and Dec to allow members to offer a midweek date for a national competition. These rinks must be used for this purpose and no league matches may be cancelled.

Note: If these rinks are not booked for this purpose by Monday of that week, members are free to use them for any other competition or rearranged league fixtures.

GUIDELINES FOR MARKERS IN SINGLES COMPETITIONS

Marking a singles match is a very responsible job. An incompetent marker can ruin a competitive singles match. If you are requested to mark a game, please be aware of the following:

  1. Only measure when requested to do so
  2. Only measure when both players are at the head
  3. If requested to measure, wedge any bowls that are not on the flat immediately.
  4. Do not invite players to the head
  5. Never remove a bowl following a measure until both players have agreed the shot.
  6. Do not “think” or “fancy” – the bowls is either shot or it is a measure. Only state factual information as requested and only answer questions from the player in possession of the mat.
  7. When asked for information regarding distance, state the distance – never stride it out.
  8. After the last bowl has come to rest, begin a silent count of the 30 seconds if it looks as if you may be required to invoke this rule. When asked, carry on counting out aloud.
  9. NEVER MOVE INTO THE HEAD UNLESS TO CHALK A BOWL OR ANSWERING A QUESTION.
  10. After the last bowl has come to rest, remain in your same position until both players have agreed the shot count or you are requested to measure. Put the score onto the scoreboard after every end.
  11. Do not have anything dangling from your arm/hand. You only require your chalk.
  12. Stand behind the head and slightly off centre at all times whilst the players are bowling.
  13. Do not talk to spectators on the bank whilst the game is in progress.

NOTICE TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS – RE: COMPETITIONS

Want to gain more experience in bowls? – want to play against better players? – Want to meet more people and broaden your horizons?

THEN WHY NOT TRY YOUR HAND AT OUR CLUB COMPETITIONS?

Entry fees are very reasonable and there are competitions to suit you at whatever the standard.

You can play on your own, with your friends, your wife, or even someone else’s wife! It’s all good experience and the worst that can happen is that you get beat.

Entry forms are available in the Competitions Section of this handbook as well as on the notice boards or ask at the bar. Look out for the closing dates as advertised.

Go On – Give them a try! Everyone has to start somewhere and, who knows, it could be you collecting the silverware at the next Presentation Evening!!

Competition Categories

To assist members with the levels of competition the categories are:

National Competitions (EIBA & EWIBA) – for ladies and gents wishing to play at the highest competitive level.

County (LIBA) Competitions – require competitors to qualify at club level before entry County play-offs with qualifiers from other clubs in the County. Ultimately qualifying for County Semi-Finals & Finals – These are open to both Ladies & Gents.

EBF County Competitions – Again require competitors to qualify through the club stages and play off with winners of other clubs. To enter these competitions you must be a member of an outdoor affiliated club and have paid a levy to that club. County winners go forward to represent Lincolnshire at the National EBF finals (played at Newark IBC).

Club Competitions – These are played throughout the season and once again are open to both ladies and gents. The finals of these competitions are played on finals nights as stated in the fixture pages of this handbook.

Over 60s & Ladies Competitions – These sections also organise club competitions specific to their own members. You are entitled to enter if you qualify.

Entry Forms

Entry forms will be available throughout the season for all of the above competitions.
